COMPLETE HISTORY OF LOUTH UNITED |
Louth United was formed in 1947 with an amalgamation of Louth Town and Louth Nats, in order to join the newly formed Lincolnshire League, as founder members. Our Reserve side forms part of the league up to the present time.
The club operated in the Lincolnshire League until the mid seventies when it joined the Midlands Counties League, from which lack of finance forced it to resign in the early eighties and return to the Lincolnshire League.
The club worked hard to get itself on a firm financial footing and at the start of the 1987/88 season it was invited to join the Supreme Division of the Central Midlands League which the club accepted. At the end of the 1992/93 season, the club gained promotion to the First Division of the Northern Counties East League.
The Club left the Northern Counties East League in 2003 when once again financial problems were the reason and for one season there was no first team.
The First team was reformed for the 2004/2005 season, going back to its roots and joining the Lincolnshire League. After two seasons the First Team left the Lincolnshire League, allowing the Louth United Reserves to take their place. The First team joined the Central Midlands Premiere Division at the start of the current season and despite early season problems, have settled well and are now enjoying some improved results.
Unit recently, The Club owned and controlled the 7 acre plot of land at it’s Park Avenue, Louth headquarters which was purchased mainly though public subscriptions and donations by the generous townsfolk of Louth. The ground accommodates two full size pitches, floodlighting on the main pitch and training lights on the second pitch. The original pylons were purchased from Peterborough United just before they joined the football league and the lamps were updated with a generous grant from the Town council. The lights were then replaced in the late nineties when Scunthorpe United had to upgrade their lights to cater for the demands of Sky TV and Louth United negotiated a deal with the original installers at Glanford Park to have them installed at Park Avenue. To celebrate the occasion and the clubs Golden Jubilee, Nottingham Forest, then managed by Dave Bassett, brought a team to Park Avenue in April 1998
The Clubroom at Park Avenue is dedicated to the memory of Ian Dean, a past chairman and a dedicated worker for local football, whilst the whole pavilion is dedicated to the memory of Jack Ranshaw, who served the club in every capacity, from it’s early beginning until his death.
If nothing else Louth United Football Club prides itself on the loyalty of it officials with both Peter Smith as secretary and Jim Bloomer as manager, serving the club for almost 20 years up to the mid nineties. Jim played for Grimsby Town, Grantham Town and Worksop before injury brought a premature end to his playing career.
Over the years a number of players have progressed from Louth United into the Football League including, Terry Donovan to Grimsby Town, Glen Cockerill who played for a number of league clubs including Southampton, Paul Bartlett to Derby County, Brian Klug to Ipswich Town and Martyn Chalk to Derby County.
Louth United are now looking for a new home to continue their climb back up the football pyramid.
